Vera Taylor's Legacy
Vera Taylor was a beloved and active member of the Santa Cruz community, dedicating her life to education, creativity, and service. Alongside her husband, Art Taylor, she was deeply involved in the First Congregational Church of Santa Cruz, now known as Peace United Church of Christ. An avid reader and lifelong learner, Vera found joy in sharing her knowledge with others.
Though they never had children of their own, Vera and Art were passionate about inspiring young minds. They introduced neighborhood children to their favorite hobbies—pottery, woodcarving, and weaving—and were dedicated volunteers in local schools. Their commitment to enriching the lives of others sparked a visionary idea: supporting young people in their pursuit of higher education.
In 1977, Vera’s legacy took a lasting form when she left a generous bequest of $250,000 to establish a scholarship program through our church. Over the past 47 years, this fund has grown tremendously, awarding more than $1 million in scholarships to nearly 50 students.
This program stands as a testament to Vera Taylor’s values, honoring her memory by fostering academic excellence, Christian love, and a deeper connection to the church community.
